tfheen Wed, 31 Mar 2004 - Naming of hosts

I really, really hate it when you either run out of host names (so stuff like planets are definetely out, at least for me. My girlfriend is sticking to them for the time being, though.), or when you have name collisions (so using the common names from Lord of The Rings is silly). My solution is to use pwgen as an inspiration. It gives meaningless, but perfectly usable names. So far, I have yiwaz (my laptop), vojei (my router), vawad (the box I run my IRC screen on and a bit more), aija (a second laptop of mine), aine (my powerpc box), and soon, I'll have the honor of naming my AMD64 box.

tfheen Wed, 31 Mar 2004 - Lazy day

Today has been a lazy day, even though it started out at full speed. Woke up at about half past seven, got up, had a shower and some breakfast. Checking the progression of my parcel with both an AMD64 system and (more importantly, actually) a couple of hard drives for the backup server at work, I discovered both that they had fixed the tracking system and that the parcel was at the local post office. Went over and picked it up, walking home with a bunch of butterflies in my stomach. Talked a little bit with Matt Taggart about the talk proposal for Debconf4, and he agreed with my proposal.

Of course, I had forgotten to order any way to cool the system, so I will have to look into that over Easter, but I did at least get the two hard drives. They were promptly installed into the backup server and a new backup run begun.

Lecture, in which I fell asleep, shame on me. (Even more shame on me since I made the lecturer, Anders, a bit unsure on whether it was him who was boring. It wasn't, it is just that I'm unable to concentrate for 45 minutes straight, so I doze off.) A very nice and short meeting at work on IRC, mostly status updates, before another short lecture. Talked a bit with the others in my Software Architecture group there and we divided the work a bit.

Karianne needed a fair bit of support during the day, I sensed something was wrong from the time she got on IRC in the morning (which was confirmed by her a few minutes later anyhow), so I kept close to her and we managed to talk through a lot of stuff. Relationships are hard, and it's not helping that she has to take medicines to function fairly well. It's nobody's fault, but it places an extra pressure on the relationship. I'm confident that we will be able to work through it, though, which is a very, very good feeling. We had dinner at my place, and Magni came over to pick up my flowers, so she'll take care of them during Easter. Thanks!

I awalked Karianne to the bus at about eleven, then walked back home. Talked a bit with both her and others on IRC before she went to bed. Managed to finally mail the abstract to the organizing committee. Just going to organize some final things before heading off for Oslo tomorrow, and a long-needed vacation. I'll miss people, especially Karianne, though.

tfheen Tue, 30 Mar 2004 - Procrastination and beer

Woke up a bit early, but managed to sleep a bit more, which is a good thing. I think my body might be chilling out now and trying to catch up on the sleep I've missed in the last two months. Yay.

Went to the university after breakfast. An acquitance from Webdeal called and wondered about Debian and AMD64, and I told him roughly the status, but agreed to give him some hints on biarch stuff. Went two floors up and worked a bit with Truls on the software architecture project. I'm getting immensely good at procrastinating when it comes to that. I don't like the project, I don't Java. Of course, I should just pull my act together and hack through it, but I haven't arrived at that point just yet.

Met Karianne downtown a bit late (she called me twice and sent me two SMS-es.. Yes, bad conscience, I think I'll have to repay that somehow later). She was going to go role-playing at Håkon's, but we wanted to see each other. Also met Alexander and another guy whose name I can't remember. Karianne bought some sweets and stuff at the grocery store. I had a milkshake at the Burger King across the street, she had a small burger. When she left with the bus, I biked home and had some food before catching a nap.

The nap was a tad longer than planned, so I nearly managed to miss a beer appointment with Tore (sjonkel) at Trondheim Microbrewery. Called him, then walked over. We had a nice time, talking about everything and nothing. Rander, Gagatan, Magne and Gustav were two tables away, but I felt like just chatting with Tore, so I decided not to wave to much to them. They came over as the place was closing up, Magne was drunk and trying to hit on me, just like only Magne is able to, but it was nice nevertheless.

Walked home and discovered that my love had gone to bed (by looking on IRC), she's tired and will need attention tomorrow, so I'll see how much sleep I'm able to catch now.

tfheen Tue, 30 Mar 2004 - NUCCCC

Friday was spent a bit on hacking the software architecture project. At least the few first hours of the day. Then there was a lot of food to be prepared; I was responsible for making the pasta and some meat dough which was to be prepared a bit. It only took about four hours to get all the pasta cooked, and I was tired when we finished. Met up with my cousin Torstein who called me on Thursday and wanted a place to stay for the night and walked him over to my place, including giving him a key. Went back to the university for a campus rally. It was nice, but tiring, we finished at about 23:30.

Saturday was also mostly spent cooking, we made a huge amount of lasagne and waffles for lunch. We were only in one lecture, Ingrid Melve's; she talked about FEIDE, a national infrastructure for managing identities. I was responsible for this year's NUCCC keysigning, after which I walked with maswan back to the school were people slept (and now, they were changing into partying mode). Went home, had a shower and changed clothes. The arrival for the party was about right, not too long until we sat down for dinner. I kept my right seat free, since Karianne hadn't arrived yet, and had Demona (Agnes) at my left side. Demona happened to be the lead singer as well, so I got to exercise my lungs, which was fun, as usual.

Karianne arrived in the middle of the first part of the meal, a bit stressed out, but she calmed down. All the food was good, both the appetizer, the main course and the dessert. Afterwards, it was coffee and (for me) a whisky. Nice and calming. Talked a bit with Alexander (Int19h) about religion, both my view on the world and Christianity. Danced a bit with Karianne and the others during the night, even though most of the music wasn't too dancable. I'm sorry that Marianne (wa-ho) had to leave so early, else it'd have been fun to dance with her.

Demona was nice and drove Karianne and me home. Woke up a bit late for the NUCC meeting on Sunday, so I managed not to get elected to anything. Met up with maswan, nikke and stric, though, and ate waffles and had a nice time. Some others were there as well. Went up to Karianne's and fell asleep on her sofa. Woke up to waffles and ice cream. I'm just becoming more and more confident that she's good for me, she's kind and caring and is one of the very, very few people who are able to slow me down when I'm stressed out, even when I don't realize I am that myself. Worked a bit on my leather shoes, which are coming into shape now, and half-watched Charlie's Angels (which I've seen a few times before).

tfheen Fri, 26 Mar 2004 - Looking forward.

Yesterday was busy, as I thought it would be. Lecture, work, having to remove a broken hard drive from vawad. After all this, I was at PVV for a little while together with Karianne. I was, naturally, a bit stressed, but she did an excellent job of calming me down. She had to go do an assigment, while I had to send the hard drive back to the store, so we parted company for a little while. I then used an hour or so more at PVV doing various random stuff before heading over and helping her a bit with her assignment and complaining about the b0rken setup of X and stuff in one of the computer labs. After a bit, I managed to get a proper keymap loaded, so I started mailing the SAs instead. My cousin Torstein also called, he's coming to town tomorrow and wanted to meet up and say hi in addition to wanting to lend a bed for tonight. He'll give me a call later today.

Had a meeting at Samfundet, with dinner. Sesse, Øystein and Mari were present, we discussed the work system for UKA05, which I'm more or less the project lead for. Had a nice talk about everything afterwards, and Ingvild also showed up. Also arranged for us having lunch today, will be nice.

Biked up to Karianne's. The sky was beautiful with a bunch of stars up, the moon was up and the sun had just set, so the skyline was glowing. She was a bit angry at some people organizing HexCon, since they hadn't done as much as they should. After a bit of food and doing something besides staring at a computer screen, she calmed down a bit. So did I, even though I had had three cups of coffee, which is usually enough to get me quite jumpy. I realized again how much I care about her.. I hope I won't ever stop doing that. She also has my utmost respect for a bunch of her standpoints.

Went home not too late, the router had died when I got home. An fsck and a reboot later, it was fine. Put a bunch of laundry for the drying before going to bed. I didn't feel sleepy, so I read about thirty pages in my current book. About fifty pages left, so I should be through sometime during the weekend, I guess.

tfheen Thu, 25 Mar 2004 - Busy, full day.

Woke up by myself after about six hours of sleep.. I don't know what it feels like to sleep eight hours any more. Hopefully, I'll catch up during Easter. Went to the university where I actually got some productive work done. I managed to get gstreamer to compile, which is good. I also requested an RMA on one of the disks in the backup server which I house at Samfundet.. it's broken, and so we're a bit short on backup.

Karianne installed Debian on a new computer of hers with only a tiny bit of assistance from me. She then came down to the university and we talked a bit. I'm so in love with her; it's impossible to describe. She was supposed to meet up with a friend downtown, but he had to postpone it a bit, so she went back home when I left for Samfundet. I picked up Gunhild's laptop on the way, which runs windows 98, in order to get the wireless card working.

The meeting at Samfundet was long and tiring, but somewhat productive as well, so I'm not complaining too loudly. Went directly from there to the dance session. Fun, as usual, and I feel a lot more confident now than I did in the beginning. I am also beginning to be able to actually hear the beats, which is a very good thing when you're dancing.

Back to Samfundet. I had forgotten the power adapter for the laptop in the meeting room, so I went over there and picked it up; met Vidar there who was fighting with one of the MP3 machines we have around. It was slow. I managed to speed it up by a factor of three or so using ugly tricks, which helped a bit, but it was still too slow.

Back at ITK, I wrestled with said laptop. It did work out in the end but took about 1.5 hours instead of the 20 minutes it should have taken. VPN client also installed. And people wonder why I like Linux and Debian and not Windows? Especially Windows 98 is bad, and it doesn't get any better by having to work on a slow laptop.

Went home afterwards, postponing the hard drive removal for tomorrow.

tfheen Wed, 24 Mar 2004 - Weekstart.

Weekstart. Taste the word. Just like weekend, only opposite. Monday had a slow start. I got up at some point, and since I didn't have any food, I talked with Magni on IRC and invited myself over for some breakfast. We had a nice, long breakfast and talked a bit afterwards. Went home, then to the university to meet up with Karianne. (Everything seems centered around her lately, I wonder why. ;)

We went down to Samfundet, sat around for a little while, talking. The power went away at some point, which coincided when she had to leave. Nobody fixed any power to the switches, so the UPS ran out of power. I thought it too silly, so I went off and found some power cable, and after a little while, managed to get som power to the UPS and the network booted again. The main file server seemed to have crashed, for some reason. Booted it.

Karianne wasn't in too good shape when she left, so we talked a bit on IRC, and since I couldn't concentrate and I wanted to talk to her, I biked up and we ended up talking a lot. It helped, both for her and me. Got home not too late, went to bed.

Tuesday started with a trip to IKEA with steinarh and Magni. Nice trip, except I was too hungry. I bought a bunch of stuff, and I think I know what kind of furniture I want to use to hold my stereo and such. A tad expensive, but it'll work itself out.

Dropped off the stuff at home, then I rode with Magni to PVV where I attended a meeting at work (IRC meetings are nice). Went to a lecture in software architecture afterwards. Back to PVV and then home with Karianne. I also talked a little with Hanne, which was nice.

We had some chicken, rice and vegetables for dinner. Nice food. She had to go to an appointment with her psychologist before we met up with Sesse and then off to DDR. Marianne, Kathrine and Erling were already there. I still suck a lot at DDR, but getting better each time, and it's fun.

We were tired as we got to my place, so we didn't do anything, just calmed ourselves down and talked about everything. I also showed her the furniture I had looked at IKEA. She left with the last bus.

I'm quite tired now.. both from DDR and from general exhaustion because I've been silly with regards to eating and such: Chocolate and soda are not replacements for proper food. I'll fix this in the coming days, I think.

tfheen Tue, 23 Mar 2004 - Life

Life is very good at the moment. Karianne and I are growing closer and closer every day. I have this weird, strange feeling that we belong together. We spend a lot of time together, talking about all sorts of things. We care a lot about each other and make sure the other is doing well. She has her downs and then I watch her. Then I am off doing something stupid and she stops me from doing that. It gives me such a good feeling, I feel confident and trust her and us.

tfheen Mon, 22 Mar 2004 - Sunday, lazy day

Woke up, then happened to wake Karianne, which I didn't intend to. She made me an account on her box, venus, so I sat around having a very nice and lazy Sunday. She woke up after a few hours and we had some breakfast. Sat around talking for some hours before she finally managed to kick me out so I could go home and upgrade the mail server t work. I did, and of course I managed to break it in the process (it only received mail and did local deliveries, no remote deliveries).

Talked to Hanne and told her about Karianne and me. She was happy for us, which I was immensely glad to see, and I hope things will be a bit easier between us in the time to come.

Went dancing afterwards, it was fun, but I was stiff, tired and sore from moving all the timber, so I left a bit early. Decided to see if Ingvild and Øystein were home. They were, so I dropped by. They were happy as well, and I watched them and Tora play Settlers of Catan (they were well on their way when I got there, so it was fine with me). Had a beer and a glass of wine. I think I spoiled Ingvild's form. (She keeps threatening me with this imaginary form with questions such as "have you gotten yourself a girlfriend lately" and so on..)

Went home about midnight, then chatted a bit with Karianne before she went to bed. Tore threw me a message on IRC, so we ended up chatting a bit before I fell asleep over the keyboard. Literally. I woke up at six o'clock with an error message in my emacs complaining that I had overflowed a stack used for syntax highlighting. Went to bed and got myself a bit more sleep.

tfheen Mon, 22 Mar 2004 - Saturday

Woke up next to Karianne, at 05:30. We talked a bit, and just before the alarm clock went off, we kissed. I was so happy the clock didn't go off 30 seconds before.. I made a fire so we had some breakfast a bit later. We went outside and started to help move a lot of timber. In The Village proper, I saw a tent (a lavvo, actually) which wasn't in too good shape, having been pulled down by the snow during the winter. I decided to excavate it while the other moved some other snow for the timber. It took a few hours, but I think the tent will make it. At the end of the day, we were about finished and my hands were tired and scratched. I had managed to not kill myself, even though I scared most of the others at one point where I fell backwards and into a pile of boards. It made a lot of noise, but I only just grazed my left elbow.

We drove back to Trondheim, I got off at home, caught a shower before biking off to Karianne's. The three of us went to Håkon's for a birthday party. Was very nice, even though I was dead tired. Magni looked a bit tired (she was a bit sick, still) but very curious on whether anything had happened between Karianne and me. I gave her an update but asked her not to tell the world until I had talked with Hanne, just out of courtesy and good manners.

Had some nice chats with Håkon, he's a very interesting person. Also, I was fascinated at the level of geekiness among the role players present. Not computer geekiness, role player geekiness.

Went home with Karianne at midnight, we sat around talking for a while, and I'm getting more and more fond of her as time passes.. We are different, but we have a mutual respect for each other's viewpoints and beliefs, which is crucial.

tfheen Mon, 22 Mar 2004 - Friday

Woke up after too little sleep, about four hours. Went to a lecture in Systems Administration, which was good, but I was sleepy and getting hungry. I wanted to get some paperwork done, but I had to wait until the 12:15 to do it, because of a stupid office only being open from 12:15 to 15:45.. Anyhow, I fixed a few formalities before heading home and getting dressed for the trip to the woods.

Thomas and Karianne picked me up at home and we drove first to a gas station on the other side of the town. There, we me up with a truck which we were to follow. On the way to The Village, we discovered that the outer right wheel on the truck was moving disturbingly much. Fifteen minutes later, we stopped and discovered that three of five bolts were very loose. We tightened them and washed the lights on the backside of the truck (they were covered in mud, which is a bad thing when you are driving behind said vehicle).

As we left the main road for the last kilometer or so up to the village, the road was covered with snow. We decided to put chains on the truck's wheels. The left one was easy, apparently, but the right wheel was hard to fix. I had never done it before, but together with the others, I managed to fix it. While doing this, I had this good feeling of actually doing something and using my hands and body, not just punching a keyboard.

We managed to drive most of the way up to the turning spot and parking place, but the truck threw the chains on the left wheel somewhere along the way, so we stopped a few hundred meters short. It was already getting darker. We pitched the tent, which took a while due to it getting dark and nobody being in charge. I decided to stay inside and help getting the center about straight. As a nice bonus, Karianne was also there, so we stood in the darkness, talking softly and holding hands.. Nice. A few more people arrived, and I started having problems remembering all the names. I think the ones who came were Line, Cecilie, Helge and Espen, though I might very well misremember. I've probably also forgotten some people.

Line and Cecilie made dinner, which was good, before we dozed off in the tent, now warm and cozy. Karianne had brought her huge sheep, so we had out sleeping bags on that. We also had the nicest place in the whole tent, opposite the entrance, and completely flat.

I woke a few times during the night.. one time about one hour after I had fallen asleep. I was so sure the others had pulled a prank on me and turned me around. I fumbled around with my feet and discovered they hadn't, which caused me to relax. Slept a bit unrestful the rest of the night, watching over Karianne in my sleep.

tfheen Mon, 22 Mar 2004 - Thursday.

I don't remember much about Thursday. I decided not to go to a lecture, instead opting for doing some Software Architecture. Programming, fun enough, but my mind wasn't on programming, it was on seeing Karianne later that day. We walked to her place, ate some dinner (spaghetti), then a little later, walked down to Samfundet. There we watched a very special movie -- The Girl on the Bridge. Special movie, with both a special girl beside me and a special girl on the film. Stood around and talked to Karianne for a little while before she took the bus home again. Walked home, and talked to her for a while on IRC.

Looking forward to getting out in the woods on Friday.

tfheen Thu, 18 Mar 2004 - Sleep

Tuesday was good, I was to a lecture, then in the afternoon I ate dinner with Karianne. Pancakes. Thomas came over and we sat around hacking clothing and shoes, he for a LRP next weekend or something, Karianne for something during Easter, I actually finished the first shoe I was working on during the night. It was good to sit there and talk, undestanding each other. The only problem was I got home far too late, so I overslept on Wednesday. Still, I was tired the whole Wednesday. Went to sleep on a sofa on PVV, which was good, except it was too bright and too hot there. Woke up, then five minutes passed and Anders called me. I met up with him and had a chat, I think it helped a bit. Was at Samfundet for a few hours before heading off for Lindy Hop. I love dancing, it's soo much fun.

Went to sleep early, at about 0100, read a little before walking off into la-la land. I need to sleep more and not sap myself so hard. I wonder when I'll actually learn that..

tfheen Tue, 16 Mar 2004 - IRC

Woke up at 0700, then crawled around in bed for an hour before getting up a little after eight. I was tired. Sat around on IRC, got some food and chatted a little before heading off for a meeting I had forgotten. We weren't very productive, I didn't manage to concentrate, so I was mostly IRC-ing and fixing more mail server. I am beginning to hate the upgrade from Exim 4.12 to 4.30; a lot of the configuration files in the Debian package have been moved, so the configuration is mostly broken. Luckily, I am hacking at this on my test server and not my production mail server.

Went to Samfundet with Gunhild afterwards, had dinner, some salmon, which was good, but it wasn't enough food. The chocolate cake at Edgar was excellent, as usual. I managed to convince Magne to come over, as he had promised earlier in the day, so we hacked the door. Quite fun. I was supposed to go to IKEA with Magni, but due to a misunderstanding, we didn't go. We have a deal to go next Tuesday, in the morning, though.

Now I'm tired and want to sleep: tomorrow will be fun, I think. Looking forward to it already.

tfheen Tue, 16 Mar 2004 - The door hack

The evening was well spent. A friend came over and helped build a project we've been talking a lot about at Samfundet: an interface for opening the door from a computer. Naturally, we had to connect this to an IRC bot, so now we can open the door by saying "dør!" (Norwegian for "door") on IRC. Not a very hard project, except we wasted a bit of time with some wrongly sized resistors because of a silly calculation error.

The interface is a parallell cable connected to an optocoupler, whose inputs are in parallell with a 220 Ohm resistor. The output is coupled directly to a wall knob which one can punch to open the door as well. (That's the reason why we started the project in the first place: we were too lazy to walk over and punch the button.)

tfheen Mon, 15 Mar 2004 - Mail servers and friends.

Today has been spent getting my mail server at Samfundet to have greylisting, trying to get the mail server at work working with a backported exim4 from unstable and with friends.

Greylisting was fairly easily implemented; it took a few hours because I don't know my way around pg_hba.conf and the exim docs could use a better index. I didn't manage to finish upgrading exim on the test server at work before heading off for some dinner. Afterwards, I went to Karianne where we sat around chatting and making shoes for a LRP in August. Fun. I'm tired, and I should be a bit more careful about wearing her out, she hasn't recovered completely from the coughing and such. Hopefully, she'll be ok again soon. It's amazing how fast we've become good friends, and I'm really enjoying getting to know her better. Now it's off to bed and up in about four hours for some physics in the morning, and a trip to IKEA with Magni. Fun.

tfheen Sun, 14 Mar 2004 - Greylisting

Some friends of mine were running about and saying nice things about greylisting, so I decided to try it and see how it works out. I actually have a full in-exim-implementation now. It would have been cool if exim had some sort of db4 write support or something, but I've gone with postgresql instead. The implementation in exim is as follows:

In the main part, I have

 GRAYLIST_TEST = SELECT CASE \
                  WHEN now() - block_expires > 0 THEN 2 \
                  ELSE 1 \
                 END \
                 FROM relaytofrom \
                 WHERE relay_ip='${quote_pgsql:$sender_host_address}' \
                 AND from_domain='${quote_pgsql:$sender_address_domain}'

 GRAYLIST_ADD  = INSERT INTO relaytofrom (relay_ip, from_domain) \
                 VALUES ( '${quote_mysql:$sender_host_address}', \
                 '${quote_mysql:$sender_address_domain}')

 hide pgsql_servers = localhost/greylisting/exim/password

Then, in the DATA acl, I have

  warn    set acl_m7 = ${lookup pgsql{GRAYLIST_TEST}{$value}{0}}

  defer message = Greylisted - please try again a little later
          condition      = ${if eq{$acl_m7}{0}{1}}
          condition      = ${lookup pgsql{GRAYLIST_ADD}{yes}{no}}
  defer   condition      = ${if eq{$acl_m7}{1}{1}}

Why the data part, you may ask. The reason is quite simple, I don't want to break callouts at all. Also, this server is on 100MBit so I don't care about any wasted bandwidth.

The table definition is fairly simple:

create table relaytofrom
(
        id              serial,
        relay_ip        inet,
        from_domain     varchar(255),
        block_expires   timestamp default now()+(interval '60 seconds')
                        NOT NULL,
        record_expires  timestamp default now()+(interval '1 week')
                        NOT NULL,
        origin_type     varchar(16) DEFAULT 'AUTO'
                        CHECK (origin_type in ('MANUAL','AUTO')) NOT NULL,
        create_time timestamp default now() NOT NULL
);

Hope this helps somebody to get a little less spam.

You are a human shadow. If a loved one needs you,
you are always right at his or her heels! Your
deep social connection with human beings
produces your qualities of genuine caring and
charisma. However, at times you are naive to
the true nature of your loved ones. Remember
that humans' gift of free will does not always
lead them in wise directions. But your essence
of love and friendship represent the other
precious gifts of humanity. Overall you are a
strikingly valuable and innocent being who has
a lot to give.

tfheen Sat, 13 Mar 2004 - Fun and friendships

I was out dancing last night. Big party, lots of people, fairly decent-sized dance floor. I happened to meet up with Tale, an old-time friend of mine. We danced a bit and talked and had a lot of fun. It's good when you meet friends like that. Some other random guy seemed to have a hit on her and refused to let her go when she wanted to go home. Time after time. In addition, he was a lousy dancer and a drunk one too. I tried to rescue her a few times, which gave me a few extra dances, so that was good, but she didn't manage to slip away. I find it sad to see situations like that, where he didn't get the point, and the result was she not having a good time dancing with him.

My friendship with Karianne is developing. It has been some time since I've had such a friendship, and it is very nice to see how it develops. She's a great girl, intelligent and nice to talk to, so we are spending hours each day talking mostly on IRC. I realize how important it is to develop new friendships and get to know different people. People view the world in different ways, people think about most things in various ways, and it's fun and exciting to learn to know the ways.

tfheen Sat, 13 Mar 2004 - Party, party.

Woke up by myself a little before eight o'clock. Ate some breakfast, then went off for a lecture, of which I missed about half. The part I did reach was about ethics as an IT administrator. Interesting. Went to PVV afterwards, where I managed to do a physics assignment. Talked a lot with Karianne on IRC, went home, caught a shower before trotting off to akai's. Ate some great dinner there and talked a lot. Was nice. Then went off to Singsaker Studenthjem where we spent the rest of the evening dancing. As usual, very, very fun; I got home sometime between six and seven o'clock (in the morning). I love dancing.

tfheen Fri, 12 Mar 2004 - Wednesday; Thursday; dance and dinner

Wednesday was spent working on the experts in team proejct. Fun enough, I hope we're coming into shape soon. We'll probably be using gstreamer as our architectural basis. After doing that, I went down to Samfundet, had some dinner at Sesam, before fumbling about for a few hours. Went dancing, and what a dance session. It was the most interesting dance session I've been to. Learned a lot, and had tremendous amounts of fun. Danced a bit with a girl afterwards, it was fun. Fell asleep on my laptop.

Thursday was spent first discussing some Kerberos and LDAP issues with the System Administration course and the rest of the groups. Spent some time at PVV to fix up some more Kerberos issues and get it integrated with LDAP. Worked after a while, when I finally fixed some syntax issues.

Went over to P15, another building and met up with Karianne. I helped her a little bit with a programming assignment. Most of my help was on the form of asking questions. She managed to debug the code after a little while. We then sat around, talking about live roleplaying for a while before heading off to my place. I had to wash some dishes in order to actually be able to see my kitchen, so I did that and we talked. Made some dinner afterwards: chicken and rice with some vegetables in a wok. Quite good. Sat around until about 22:00, when she had to leave.

We had a good and long talk about everything. She's a really, really nice girl, open and friendly. She also has lots of interesting thoughts, thoughts which challenge some of my conceptions, which is good. I'm looking forward to seeing her more, and I'm very happy I have found a friend like her.

tfheen Tue, 09 Mar 2004 - Busy, busy

Been too busy to post to my blog for the last few days. First, it was Sunday where we finished the cabling stuff we were going to do in the weekend. I'm often amazed at how little space I need to get in places; 50cm between the floor and ceiling is plenty of space. 35cm is getting tight, especially when the floor is strewn with nails, rocks, wooden parts and generally is a bit rough. So my underarms are all cut up, but we did finish what we started. Good, good.

Sunday evening was spent dancing; I had the courage to ask a few girls to dance, and it's so much fun. I am also getting better and am sometimes able to hear the beats of the music. Dancing when not hearing when one period starts and it ends is kinda hard. Dad also called me, so we had a little chat, and Anders (akai) dropped by when I got home. Nice visit, and I was invited for dinner on Friday.

Also talked a bit more with Karianne, we decided to meet on Thursday and hang out together. She is fun to talk to, so I'm looking forward to it.

My server, vawad, died sometime during the night. I woke up too early (since I had slept something like nine hours during the weekend and six more the night before Monday) and wandered off to Samfundet. A reboot with an fsck fixed the problem, so hopefully it was just a glitch of some sort. Fell asleep on the couch at Samfundet, slept for about half an hour. Went up to the university, worked at the project in Software Architecture for a few hours; went over to PVV where I spent a little time sulling about; didn't get any real work done.

Øystein, Magnus and I had a meeting with the leader of UKA05 and had a very constructive discussion on how to do IT services for them. Worked a bit on various random projects before going home at half past eleven. Once home, I started working on the TDT4285 project, putting in support so we can now check the dotfiles for vaffel and acme out of subversion. Also changed the domains from the nice-looking ii.ntnu.no to the stupidly ugly tdt4285.idi.ntnu.no.

tfheen Sat, 06 Mar 2004 - Dirtyness and networks

Most of the day was spent crawling around inside the student society. Inside, as in, beneath floors, inside walls and on top of ceilings. We were of course wiring the student society, one of the last areas is now finally switching from 10Base-2 (thin ethernet, coax) to a 100Mbit switched TP infrastructure. Tiring, but fun nonetheless. Those areas haven't seen anything resembling cleaning equipment in about a hundred years (when the society was built), so we ended up quite dirty.

Looking forward to the concert tonight, if I manage to stay awake, since I've only slept three hours last night. It's hard to stay up partying. :)

tfheen Fri, 05 Mar 2004 - Tired

I was so tired last night that I couldn't even bring up the strength to write up a blog entry. Yesterday was nice, most of the day was spent cleaning up my apartment, then I had Agnes, Ingvild, Øystein and Bjørn-Ove for dinner in the evening. Very, very nice.

I ended up in a longer and more serious IRC conversation than I first understood, but it worked out very well, and I see the seeds of a friendship as a result of that chat. I do care, I care a lot about people around me, even those which may think I don't because they think I have no reason to. I went to bed too late, somewhere after 01:00.

Today, Friday was even more tiring. Went to the university and thought I was going to have a mid-term at 10:00. Of course, it wasn't until 13:00 (which I was told by chance by a friend of mine at 12:40). Most of the rest of the day was spent sitting in a server room trying to fix Samfundet's backup server. It just would not boot, until I fiddled around enough in the BIOS to make it.

Went home afterwards, made dinner. Will try to catch some sleep before the concert this evening. I actually managed to get in touch with akai so he's joining me as well. Will be nice.

tfheen Thu, 04 Mar 2004 - Vampires

As always, I woke up. Today a little before nine. Food, then I went off for university. I actually was there even though I wasn't supposed to meet anybody or anything. I wrote up most of my suggestion for a development plan for UKA05, a student- and cultural festival. I hope it'll be accepted; we'll have a meeting about it on Monday. At about 1200, I went down to the local hospital to feed the vampires. (I'm a blood donor.) My blood vessels are quite good, so the blood left my body a bit quickly, which left me dizzy. The nurses were a bit worried, but I was fine.

Went over to Samfundet afterwards, where I sat and fixed some minor stuff before heading off to the weekly IT committee meeting. Nothing exciting. My father called, so I started helping him with the Cisco 803 router at home (over a too slow DSL line with VNC. VNC is bloody slow.)

I almost forgot to go dancing, but once there, it was tremendous amounts of fun, as always. Went home with Øystein afterwards, then hung about on IRC a little.

Good day.

tfheen Thu, 04 Mar 2004 - Dancing

Because of the vampire draining earlier today, I for a little while wondered whether I was going to go dancing at all. I did, and it was fun. I just love dancing so much. It's fun, fun, fun. I'm amazed that I'm able to dance so well as I do. (And I don't dance well at all :)

tfheen Wed, 03 Mar 2004 - Tired

I'm tired today. Got a full eight hours of sleep, which mean getting up at about 11:00. Breakfast, got dressed and off to the university for a meeting in the software architecture class. A bit boring, especially since a bunch of us weren't properly prepared. IRC meeting with work interrupted this. The meeting took about double the amount of time it was supposed to, but apart from that, went fairly well. Also got some other minor things fixed up.

Gunhild had some problems with her windows system doing weird stuff. Actually, it was lilo being a bit too smart for its own well-being, but.. Fixed it, eventually. Also helped her fix some minor other annoyances with the system. Then went down to Eirik Refdal's for some waffles. He's good at making waffles. Really, really good.

Then went back to the university, where we hacked on the System administration project, and I discovered (again) that OpenSSH sucks. A lot, at least on FreeBSD. I was totally unable to get it to use Kerberos for authentication. Telnet, even encrypted telnet worked just fine.

Went a short trip down to Mari's before heading home. Extremely tired, going to get lots of sleep before meeting the vampires tomorrow.

tfheen Wed, 03 Mar 2004 - Frustration

I'm frustrated with something, and I have no idea what. The last few days, when walking home, I've been a bit melancolic. I'm not usually melancolic, so I wonder a bit what's amiss. I hope it's not serious. Should just pass away in a while, I hope.

tfheen Tue, 02 Mar 2004 - Dualities

A lot of the time, I feel dragged between two extreme endpoints. I love computers, but at times, I get so sick and tired of them that I want to talk about anything but them. Of course, that does not mean I stop playing with them for said time period, it just means I play with toys I'm tired of. A bit frustrating.

Then, at other times, I feel one with the machines and it's so much fun to do magic with them. Since computers is one of my greatest passions, I feel it more with them than other stuff, but in many ways it's the same with Samfundet, and sometimes with people.

I wonder if I'm the only one who has it that way. I probably am not, but it feels like I have it in a fairly extreme fashion, which gets tiresome.

tfheen Tue, 02 Mar 2004 - Eventful day

Woke up at 09:10, after four hours of sleep. Because of lack of sleep, my day has been a bit more tiring than I intended it to be. First, I was at an workshop in Max/MSP, which is some sort of a drag-and-drop programming environment. Since I'm a programmer myself, I first unconciously tried to fend it off as a toy, but it was actually fun to work with, and even though I don't think it scales very well. I might be very wrong, though.

There's a GPL-ed variant of Max available as Pure-Data. Its user interface is less polished, but it seems to contain a lot of the functionality. I hacked a bit on it to get it to compile. (It's not C99 clean.)

Went home a bit early, caught some sleep, woke up on the sofa, with my feet freezing. It took about 15 minutes to get them into a somewhat-usable state, then I went down to the shop and bought the meat for Thursday's dinner.

I then decided to go to samfundet, which was nice. Helped Gunhild install Linux on her laptop, and installed MS Windows 98 on my brother's girlfriend's laptop (whose is also name Gunhild) and MS Office 2000. Also got a new kernel on vawad, now with DMA to the hard drives connected to the mainboard.

The fire alarm went off just before I was finished installing, so I stood around for a while longer than intended, but it was ok. Went home afterwards, and then I'm off to bed.

When walking home the last few days, I have been feeling a bit uneasy. There is something bothering me, but I am not sure I know what it is. I hope I'll discover soon, so it can be remedied; it's making me even more tired.

tfheen Mon, 01 Mar 2004 - Sunday

Woke up a little before nine. IRC, mail, breakfast, before heading of for the Skolelinux gathering. Got a bit more done today, and finished up most of the CVS inactivity tracker, which is actually getting into a nice shape. Went to Helene's afterwards were she and Svein were. She served a most delicious lasagne. Even though I was a bit sleepy, I stayed for some more hours than I had planned. Very nice and talkative evening.

It was raining on the way home, so I was a little wet. Went to bed, hacked a little on dpkg, but mostly on a tracking system for handling fixed-in-SVN bugs. Debbugs isn't that bad, it's quite a bit better than I thought.

tfheen Mon, 01 Mar 2004 - Saturday

Woke up with a headache on Saturday. Ragnar didn't feel too good either, but we went to the store and got some bread for breakfast. After breakfast, we went to the Skolelinux gathering at Brundalen. It was quite ok, and I got some work done; mostly sysadmin stuff, but also helped out with various other small tasks. In the evening, we went to a chinese restaurant. Nice enough, but everybody was so tired that we just went home and then to sleep.

tfheen Mon, 01 Mar 2004 - Friday

Friday; no idea when I got up, but it was fairly early. Went about and fixed a lot of stuff, cleaned my apartment up a bit and so on. Went to Samfundet, then Magnus' at about 1700, to make food together with Bjørn-Ove. We made some melon and ham for starters, then a big chunk of chicken fillets with some curry-based paste over and under, made in the oven, with huge amounts of rice to. For dessert, we had ice cream and fried bananas. It was good. Ragnar Wisløff was in town, and he joined us for dinner, so that was really nice.

Afterwards, we went to Samfundet and Ragnar and I were up too late getting fairly drunk. Had a great time catching up and talking about life, the universe and most other stuff.
